CHLORINE GENERATION SIMPLIFIED

Chlorine generation is easily accomplished through the means of electrolytic conversion. In simpler terms: chlorine can be generated or liberated from a compound that contains chlorine by introducing an electrical current across a set of electrodes in a medium that contains the potential of releasing chlorine, such as a brine solution.

What is Chlorine?

Chlorine is a highly reactive, (tends to bond readily with other elements) naturally occurring element that was discovered in 1774 by pharmacist Carl Wilhelm Scheele. It was not named until 1810 by Sir Humphrey Davey.

Because Chlorine is highly reactive, it is usually found in nature, bound to other elements such as sodium, potassium and magnesium. This reactivity is precisely what makes chlorine an effective killer of bacteria and viruses. The powerful disinfectant qualities of chlorine come from its ability to bond with and destroy the outer surfaces of bacteria and viruses.

How is chlorine produced?

Lets first look at one of the methods that Chlorine Manufacturing facilities utilize.

Commercial chlorine manufacturers create chlorine by breaking down extremely concentrated brine solutions of sodium chloride with submerged electrodes that have a very high amperage induced in them. The Sodium Chloride bond is broken thus freeing the chlorine. Off gassing of the element occurs when the bonds of the sodium and chlorine are broken. The chlorine gas is then captured above the vats or tanks of the brine solution and condensed or distilled. It is then stored until it is sold to consumers, industries and spa purification or pool purification companies.

So how do I generate chlorine myself?

There are only two things needed to generate unlimited amounts of chlorine. The first thing that is needed is a chemical compound that contains chlorine (like ordinary table salt) and second is a means of breaking down the compound so the chlorine can be liberated or freed, Like an electrical current running between to electrodes. Once it is free, the chlorine can do it's purification work.

Where can I find a chlorine compound source?

Table salt, that's right, salt is an excellent source of a naturally occurring chlorine compound. The chemical name for salt is NaCl or Sodium Chloride mineralogists call it Halite. It is abundantly available and it is extremely inexpensive. Since table salt is a good source of chlorine, and it is everywhere in abundance, it makes it a perfect candidate for chlorine generation.

Your swimming pool or spa can be an efficient chlorine generation plant by simply adding a small percentage (3000-5000 ppm) of salt to the existing water in your Pool or Spa and placing a container with energized electrodes in-line with the pump and filtration system. The electrodes are only energized while the pump is circulating so that no overheating of the electrodes or build-up of gas occurs in the plumbing lines.

Is my Chlorine generator Dangerous?

Absolutely not! The electricity used to energize the electrodes is Low Voltage Direct Current (8-28 Volts). This technique has been the industry safety standard for the past 40+ years.

How much does it cost to run my Mini Chlorine generation plant?
Anywhere from $5-$15 a month for the electricity, depending on how large your pool is. The average cost is $7 a month for the average swimming pool.

The actual power consumption also depends on the percentage of chlorine you require in your Pool or Spa and the bather load.

What happens to the chlorine once it is liberated from the sodium?
After the chlorine has done it's sanitizing work, it recombines with the sodium and can then be recycled through the system to repeat the purification of your Pool or Spa again and again.

How often do I need to add more salt?

You only need to add salt to the system when you have had a lot of splash out and you add water to the pool or if you happen to get an excessive amount of rain. Other than that, you rarely need to add salt.

What other chemicals do I need once I install my Chlorine Generator?

You will need to purchase a stabilizer for your pool or Spa (Cyanuric Acid), this holds the chlorine in the water once it is produced and protects it from the ultraviolet light. Once the stabilizer is added, it stays in the pool and you should not need to add any more. You will also need to use the typical pH lowering products, such as Hydrochloric Acid, Potash Etc. Maintaining the proper pH is very important we recommend a pH of 7.2 to 7.6. The lower the pH the more effective the chlorine is.

What role do IONIZERS play in Pool the maintenance scheme?

...DO THE MATH !!
Copper IONIZERS can greatly reduce the need for chlorine in your pool or Spa while adding a great ally to your arsenal of antibacterial and antivirals; it is one of the best algaecides available.

You can reduce the amount of chlorine that you use by up to 7-1/2 times!!

For example: if you use 3ppm chlorine in your pool without an Ionizer, you can effectively keep your pool water just as clean if you maintain .3ppm copper and .4ppm chlorine.

(THAT'S NOT A TYPO, POINT 4 PPM CHLORINE AND POINT 3 PPM COPPER)

Mathematically 3ppm (chlorine) divided by.4ppm(chlorine) = 7.5
The amount of savings if you maintain your pool at 2ppm chlorine is 5 times!!The amount of savings if you maintain your pool at 1ppm chlorine is 2-1/2 times!!So for math's' sake, let's say you spend $250 a year on chlorine maintaining your pool at 1ppm chlorine.

With an IONIZER, you could have better quality water and spend only $100 a year!!

Can I use a chlorine generator and an Ionizer together?
